Water parameters
Overview
Erythropodium is a soft coral that spreads like a thin skin over rock and dead coral on Caribbean reefs. With the polyps open, long, thin, hair-like tentacles cover the surface and the colony looks like a brown fur waving in the current; when the polyps close, the surface remains smooth and flat. It differs from the similar-looking corky sea finger (Briareum asbestinum) in that its polyp mouths do not form bumps on the surface and it does not send up upright rods. It is sold in the trade as "encrusting gorgonian."
Light, Flow and Water Parameters
- It adapts to a wide range of light and flow; moderate light (about 100–250 PAR) and moderate flow are ideal.
- The middle zone of the rockwork; preferably a separate rock with clear boundaries. It can quickly cover the glass and rockwork.
- Salinity 1.024–1.026, KH 7–11 dKH, calcium 400–450 mg/L.
- There is not enough information about its toxicity; wearing gloves while working with it is a good habit.
Diet
It is photosynthetic and not demanding about feeding; light and normal fish feeding are enough. Fine phytoplankton can be offered occasionally.
Neighbors and Compatibility
It does not sting its neighbors, but its fast-spreading base can wrap around the bases of other corals, especially gorgonians, and kill them over time. Leave at least 15 cm of clear space around it and trim the spreading edges. It is compatible with fish and the cleanup crew; protect it from gorgonian-eating snails.
A short profile for this species
The Encrusting Gorgonian page has the basics, but the sections below have not been written yet. If you keep this species, write a section from your own experience; it will be published under your name after editor approval.
