Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Pogostemon stellatus, formerly known as Eusteralis stellata, is a stem plant whose leaves are arranged along the stem in whorls that open out like stars. Under strong light the narrow, long leaves take on colors ranging from green to purple, lilac and reddish tones; planted as a group it is very eye-catching. It is, however, a demanding plant: it needs strong light, regular CO₂, soft water and plenty of nutrients. It is very sensitive to nutrient deficiencies; when iron or nitrogen runs low, new leaves immediately become stunted and pale.

Planting and Placement

  • Plant the stems individually, 3–4 cm apart, 3–4 cm deep.
  • Place it in the background, in a spot that receives direct light.

Care and Fertilization

  • Light: High.
  • CO₂: Required.
  • Fertilizer: A nutrient-rich substrate, root tabs and regular liquid fertilizer; nitrogen, iron and potassium must not be allowed to run short.
  • Trimming: Cut from the top; replant the cut tips. Since the older lower parts become bare over time, renew the group with fresh tips.
