Betta pi is a wild betta of 8–9 cm with a black marking on its throat resembling the Greek letter π; its scientific name also comes from this marking. Its body is reddish brown, and rather than shiny scales it has a plain, warm color. It lives in peat swamps and forest streams of southern Thailand, the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. The male carries the fertilized eggs in his mouth.

Behavior and Compatibility

A calm species; pairs move around together. Males are territorial toward other males. It hunts shrimp and small fish fry; it is kept in a species tank or with calm fish suited to peat water.

Good companions: pencilfish, larger calm rasboras, kuhli loach, bottom dwellers suited to peat water.

Avoid: dwarf shrimp, species that need hard water, fast and greedy schools, fin nippers.
