Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

As one of the first cichlids brought to Europe in the late 19th century, the chanchito holds a special place in aquarium history. Its olive-green or brownish body has six or seven dark vertical bands; males reach 20 cm. Because it comes from a subtropical region, it tolerates cool water. Due to this hardiness, individuals released into the wild in countries such as Portugal and Spain have become established and invasive; it must never be released into the wild. The genus Australoheros has been split into many species in recent years; some fish sold under this name in the trade may be related species.

Tank Setup

  • At least 250 liters and 120 cm of length for a pair.
  • Large rocks, caves and roots; it digs the substrate and uproots plants.
  • It adapts to a wide range of water values; 22–26°C in summer and cooler water in winter are beneficial.
  • A 30% water change weekly.

Diet

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Omnivorous with a big appetite. Make cichlid granules the staple; vary them with frozen bloodworms, mysis, shrimp and vegetables.

Behavior and Compatibility

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Territorial and tough, especially during breeding; it eats fish and snails that fit in its mouth.

Good companions: robust cichlids of similar size, large barbs, plecos; species that tolerate cool water should be preferred.

Avoid: small, peaceful fish, shrimp, snails, planted layouts.
