Water parameters
Overview
The red fin dwarf pleco is a small suckermouth catfish that resembles an otocinclus at first glance but is distinguished from it by the red spot on its caudal peduncle and its reddish fins. Another difference from Otocinclus is that it has a small adipose fin behind the dorsal fin.
It comes from the cool, clear coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil. Adults grow to 5–6 cm; fish from São Paulo are reported to stay smaller. Because it is very sensitive to water quality, it is recommended for experienced keepers.
Tank Setup
- At least 60 liters for a group of 6.
- A mature, planted aquarium with established biofilm; clean, oxygen-rich water.
- 18–23°C; unheated cool aquariums are ideal. A 25–30% water change every week.
Diet
Biofilm and fine algae are its main food. It should be supplemented with blanched zucchini, spinach, spirulina tablets and algae-based gel foods.
Behavior and Compatibility
Peaceful and timid; it is more at ease in a group. It harms no fish, shrimp or plants.
Good companions: Small fish that like cool water: White Cloud Mountain minnows, dwarf shrimp, coolwater otocinclus.
Avoid: Warm-water species, large and greedy fish, newly set-up aquariums.
