Overview
Betta foerschi is a wild betta of about 6 cm that lives in the peat swamps of Central Kalimantan. On the males' dark brown to black body, the two bright orange-red vertical bars on the gill cover immediately catch the eye. The male carries the fertilized eggs in his mouth. Like most species that depend on peat water, it needs very soft, acidic water, so it is recommended for experienced hobbyists.
Tank Setup
- At least 40 liters for a pair.
- 25–27°C, pH 4.5–6.5, GH 0–4; use reverse osmosis water or rainwater.
- A thick layer of dried leaves, roots, dim light and floating plants.
- Almost still water; a sponge filter and a tight lid.
Diet
Carnivorous. Frozen and live brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia and mosquito larvae should be the staple; some fish accept granules. Feed small amounts 1–2 times a day.
Behavior and Compatibility
Calm and timid; pairs move around together. Males display to each other. It cannot get food next to fast, greedy tankmates; it is best kept in a species tank.
Good companions: pencilfish, Boraras species, small and calm fish suited to peat water.
Avoid: species that need hard water, fast schooling fish, large gouramis, fin nippers.
