Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

The ruby tetra is a small tetra from Colombia with an adult size of around 2.5 cm. In stores it often looks pale orange; in good conditions and as it matures, the whole body turns deep ruby red. It is available in the trade only in limited numbers. Its small size and calm nature make it very well suited to planted nano tanks and shrimp tanks.

Behavior and Compatibility

Very peaceful and somewhat shy. It feels safe in a large school and a planted environment. It does not harm shrimp.

Good companions: micro rasboras such as Boraras, pygmy corydoras, otocinclus, small pencilfish, dwarf shrimp.

Avoid: medium and large tetras, active species, any fish that can fit it in its mouth.
