Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Synodontis brichardi comes from the fast-flowing rapids of the lower Congo River. Its body is more compressed and flattened than that of other Synodontis; this shape makes it easier for it to hold on to the bottom in the current. It has pale vertical bands on a dark brown to black background. Adults reach about 15 cm.

Tank Setup

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit
  • At least 200 liters and 120 cm of length for a single fish or a small group.
  • Strong flow and high oxygen are essential; use an extra circulation pump.
  • Flat stones, rock crevices and rounded gravel or a sand substrate.
  • 23–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5; clean, frequently changed water.

Diet

Omnivorous. Offer sinking granules and tablets, spirulina tablets, frozen bloodworms and mysis. Because food is quickly swept away in the current, drop sinking tablets between stones or in corners where the flow is weaker.

Behavior and Compatibility

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Peaceful toward other species; it may spar with its own kind over spots under stones. It becomes stressed in calm, still-water aquariums. It eats fry and dwarf shrimp. Its scaleless skin is sensitive to copper, and its spines get caught in nets.

Good companions: current-loving fish: Congo rapids cichlids (Steatocranus), Congo tetras, current-loving barbs, rainbowfish.

Avoid: slow species that need still water, long-finned fish, dwarf shrimp.
