Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Fundulus chrysotus is a surface killi that lives in planted swamps, lakes and slow-moving waters on the coastal plains of the southeastern USA. The males' olive-green to gold body is decorated with scattered red-brown spots and glittering gold scales; females are plainer. It stays near the surface and hunts insects that fall into the water. Because it is used to seasonal temperature changes, it lives comfortably in unheated aquariums. It lays its eggs on plants and keeps spawning for weeks.

Tank Setup

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit
  • At least 60 liters for one male and two females; a large surface area.
  • Floating plants, dense planting along the edges and an open strip at the surface.
  • 20–24°C is ideal; a heater is usually not needed.
  • A tight lid; 25% water change weekly.

Diet

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Mainly omnivorous. It accepts floating flakes and granules; it should be supplemented with mosquito larvae, bloodworms, brine shrimp and fruit flies.

Behavior and Compatibility

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

A calm surface fish; males put on brief displays among themselves. It eats small fish and fry that fit in its mouth.

Good companions: calm medium-sized fish suited to cool water: zebra danios, rosy barbs, large tetras, corydoras.

Avoid: fish under 3 cm and fry, large and aggressive species.
