Overview
The butterfly pleco is a Dekeyseria recognized by its flat body and a maze pattern of light lines on a dark background. In juveniles the pattern takes the form of regular bands; with age the bands break up and turn into complex, net-like shapes.
Its scientific identity is disputed: depending on the source it is referred to as D. brachyura, D. picta or a not yet described species. Fish from the Orinoco and Atabapo region are the ones most often sold in the trade. Adults reach 12–14 cm.
Tank Setup
- At least 150 liters for one or two fish.
- Roots and flat stones; soft, slightly acidic, blackwater-like water.
- 26–28°C, moderate flow and good aeration.
Diet
Omnivorous. Vegetable and spirulina tablets, blanched vegetables, and bloodworms and mysis should be given in rotation. It rasps on roots.
Behavior and Compatibility
Peaceful and nocturnal; it stays stuck to a root or stone all day. It is mildly territorial toward its own kind.
Good companions: Blackwater species: cardinal tetras, apistogramma, discus, corydoras.
Avoid: Species that need hard, alkaline water, large territorial plecos, aggressive cichlids.
