The heterodon pleco is the smallest member of the genus Leporacanthicus, known as the "vampire" plecos. Its dark body is decorated with small golden-yellow spots, which is why it is also called the "golden vampire". In the trade it is sold under the number L172 or L172a.

Sources give its length as between 10 and 18 cm; in the aquarium, fish of 12–16 cm are common. Like other members of its genus, it hunts snails and small invertebrates with its long upper teeth.

It usually leaves other fish alone but defends its cave. Snails and small shrimplets become its prey. It is nocturnal and stays in its cave during the day.

Good companions: Calm, medium-sized fish that like warm water: tetras, dwarf cichlids, corydoras.

Avoid: Snails, dwarf shrimp, other Leporacanthicus species (in limited space).
