Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Hypancistrus furunculus received the number L199 in 1995 and in 2007 became one of four Hypancistrus species described from the upper Orinoco. Its dark body is decorated with light, wavy lines. Adults reach 12–14 cm, making it a medium-sized Hypancistrus.

It is rarely found in the trade, mostly under its L-number. Its care is similar to that of other Orinoco Hypancistrus: warm, soft and well-oxygenated water and a mainly meaty diet. Because it can be mixed up with other similar-looking Orinoco Hypancistrus, it should be bought from a reliable source.

Tank Setup

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit
  • At least 150 liters for 1–3 fish, with a separate cave for each.
  • 26–28°C, soft and slightly acidic water.
  • Strong aeration and flow; a 30% water change every week.

Diet

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Mainly carnivorous: bloodworms, mysis, brine shrimp, pieces of shrimp and protein-rich sinking granules. Vegetable tablets can be given occasionally.

Behavior and Compatibility

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Peaceful and nocturnal; it spends the day in its cave. Males chase each other over caves. It easily loses the competition for food to fast bottom dwellers.

Good companions: Calm species that like warm water: cardinal tetras, dwarf cichlids, corydoras.

Avoid: Other Hypancistrus species (hybridization), large territorial plecos, aggressive cichlids.
