Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

The high-fin green phantom is a separate species sold under the same L200 number as Hemiancistrus subviridis and looking almost identical. When it was described in 2005, it turned out that the two fish belong to different genera. The most reliable distinction is that the dorsal fin is connected to the adipose fin behind it by a fleshy membrane; its mouth is also rounder.

It is known only from the area where the Orinoco and Ventuari rivers meet. Adults reach 15 cm standard length and around 17 cm including the tail.

Tank Setup

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit
  • A footprint of 120 × 45 cm (about 250 liters) for one adult.
  • Strong flow and aeration; flat stones and caves.
  • 27–29°C, soft and slightly acidic water; a 30% water change every week.

Diet

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Mainly herbivorous. Make spirulina and algae-based tablets, blanched zucchini and spinach the staple; a small amount of protein-rich food can be added 1–2 times a week.

Behavior and Compatibility

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Peaceful toward other species; territorial toward its own kind and similar plecos.

Good companions: Calm fish that like warm, soft water: large tetras, cardinal tetras, corydoras, discus.

Avoid: Keeping it in the same tank as Hemiancistrus subviridis (risk of hybridization), large territorial plecos.
