Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

The flyer pleco is the best-known member of the genus Pseudolithoxus, known in the hobby as "flyers" for their extremely flat bodies and broad pectoral fins that spread out to the sides like wings. Its black body is covered with small white spots; the white margin on the dorsal and tail fins distinguishes it from its close relatives.

In Venezuela it is known from upper and lower tributaries of the Orinoco. Museum records show a standard length of 10–12 cm; in the aquarium it is reported to reach 15 cm including the tail.

Tank Setup

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit
  • At least 150 liters for one or two fish, with a large footprint.
  • Strong flow and aeration; flat stones and narrow, flat crevices.
  • 26–28°C, a 30% water change every week.

Diet

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Omnivorous. It grazes the biofilm on rocks; vegetable and protein-rich sinking tablets, bloodworms and mysis should be given in rotation.

Behavior and Compatibility

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Peaceful but fast; with its flat body it holds its position against the current by clinging to stones. It can be territorial toward its own kind over stones and crevices.

Good companions: Calm fish that like flow: tetras, dwarf cichlids, corydoras.

Avoid: Still and low-oxygen aquariums, large territorial plecos, aggressive cichlids.
