Water parameters
Overview
The Selangor loach is a loach of about 6 cm that lives in forest streams of the Malay Peninsula and surrounding areas. Its pale yellowish-brown body carries 8–12 regular dark vertical bands. Unlike some of its Schistura relatives it is peaceful, but it is shy by nature and likes to hide during the day. Mature males show a small skin flap under the eye and bumps on the pectoral fin rays.
Tank Setup
- At least 60 liters and 60 cm of length for a group of 4–6.
- 21–25°C, pH 6–7, soft water.
- Moderate to strong flow and plenty of oxygen; a good filter and an air stone.
- Stones, roots, gravel and sand; mature, stable water, with a 30–50% water change every week.
Diet
An omnivore that feeds on small invertebrates. It accepts sinking dry foods; daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworms should be given regularly.
Behavior and Compatibility
Peaceful and shy; when kept alone it is almost never seen. In a group and in an aquarium with plenty of shelters it becomes bolder.
Good companions: small rasboras, danios, small tetras, kuhlis, shrimp.
Avoid: large and greedy bottom dwellers, aggressive Schistura species, botias.
