Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Synodontis contractus is a small Synodontis from the slow-flowing, planted waters of the Congo basin. Like the upside-down catfish (S. nigriventris), it moves upside down along the undersides of roots and leaves; the two species are often confused in the trade. Its most obvious difference is its large eyes. Adults reach 8–9 cm, and it is a peaceful species that suits community aquariums.

Tank Setup

  • At least 100 liters and 80 cm of length for a group of 4–6.
  • Roots, broad-leaved plants and caves it can get underneath.
  • 23–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard water; dim light and floating plants.
  • Clean, well-oxygenated water and a fine sand substrate.

Diet

Omnivorous. It eats small sinking tablets, granules, flakes, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. Evening feeding suits this nocturnal species best.

Behavior and Compatibility

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Very peaceful; it hides during the day and becomes active at dusk. In a group it hangs together under roots. Kept alone, it becomes very shy. Its scaleless skin is sensitive to copper-based medications.

Good companions: tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, dwarf cichlids, corydoras, upside-down catfish.

Avoid: aggressive cichlids and large predators whose mouths it would fit into; species that need hard, alkaline water.
