Overview
The niveatus pleco is a large Baryancistrus named ("niveatus": snowy) for the small white spots covering its dark body. It is one of the largest members of its genus; its standard length can exceed 23–24 cm and its total length 30 cm.
It is reliably known from the Tocantins River and the lower Araguaia. Similar fish reported from the Xingu and Tapajós are thought most likely to be other, not yet described species.
Tank Setup
- At least 400 liters and 150 cm length for one adult.
- Strong flow and aeration; flat stones and spacious caves.
- 26–28°C, a 30–40% water change every week.
Diet
Mainly herbivorous; in the wild it grazes the algae and biofilm on rocks. Make spirulina and algae tablets and blanched vegetables the staple; protein-rich food can be added 1–2 times a week.
Behavior and Compatibility
A medium-sized, territorial pleco. It usually leaves other fish alone, but drives its own kind and other plecos away from its cave.
Good companions: Medium and large fish that like flow: large tetras, Geophagus species, medium-sized cichlids.
Avoid: Other large plecos (in limited space), small and slow bottom dwellers, small aquariums.
