Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

With round cream-white spots on its dark purple-brown, almost black body and its light-and-dark banded fins, Synodontis angelicus is one of the most sought-after Synodontis species. It lives in the rivers of the Congo basin. Juveniles are especially striking; adults reach 20 cm and live a long time. It is rare and expensive in the trade.

Tank Setup

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit
  • At least 250 liters and 120 cm of length for a single adult.
  • Large roots, caves and pipes; a place where the fish can hide completely.
  • 23–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard water; fine sand substrate.
  • Strong filtration, dim corners and a 25–30% water change every week.

Diet

Omnivorous. Offer sinking granules and tablets, frozen bloodworms, mysis, pieces of shrimp and spirulina tablets. Give the main meal after the lights go out.

Behavior and Compatibility

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

Peaceful and shy when young; as it ages it can become territorial toward its own kind and similar bottom dwellers. While roaming at night it may eat very small fish sleeping near the bottom and shrimp. Its scaleless skin is sensitive to copper, and its spines get caught in nets.

Good companions: medium to large peaceful fish: large tetras, barbs, rainbowfish, calm African and American cichlids, plecos.

Avoid: small schooling fish such as neons, dwarf shrimp, other large Synodontis in a cramped tank.
