Overview

October 16, 2026 · Suggest an edit

The vaterifloris rasbora is a small species from the rainforests of southwestern Sri Lanka, deeper-bodied than other rasboras. Its body has a nacreous pink-orange sheen; its fins, especially in males, are bright orange-red. It grows to about 4 cm. Some researchers have described different populations as separate species, so colors may vary depending on the source. Because its habitat has shrunk due to deforestation, it is threatened in the wild; captive-bred fish should be preferred.

Omnivorous. It accepts small granules and flakes; frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and mosquito larvae bring out its colors.

Behavior and Compatibility

Peaceful and somewhat timid. It swims in a loose group in the middle layer; males spread their fins and display to each other and to the females.

Good companions: small rasboras, Boraras species, small tetras, dwarf corydoras species, otocinclus, shrimp.

Avoid: active and large species, aggressive fish, any species with a mouth big enough to swallow it.
