Overview
Geophagus proximus is a large eartheater that lives across a wide part of the Amazon. On a golden background it carries rows of turquoise spots along the scales, blue–green lines on the cheeks and a dark blotch in the middle of the body. It belongs to the same group as G. surinamensis and G. altifrons and was long confused with them; a significant share of the fish sold in stores as "surinamensis" are this species. It is a delayed mouthbrooder.
Tank Setup
- At least 400 liters and 180 cm of length for a group of 4–6.
- Fine, round sand is essential; leave a large open sand area.
- Roots and rocks along the edges; plants attached to roots or with tough leaves.
- Soft, slightly acidic water; change 30–50% weekly.
Diet
Omnivorous. Make small sinking granules and tablets the staple; vary them with frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis and vegetable-based food. Give 2–3 small meals a day.
Behavior and Compatibility
Peaceful and social; squabbles within the group look dramatic but are harmless.
Good companions: severum, uaru, festivum, Satanoperca species, large tetras, silver dollars, plecos.
Avoid: aggressive Central American cichlids, gravel substrate, small shrimp.
